For first-timers, let them get used to being on a bike by bringing them along with you in a child seat, in a trailer or in front of a push scooter.
Get a bike that is the right size. Your kid should sit on the seat comfortably and be able to put both feet on the ground.
Gear them up with protective equipment like a safety helmet, elbow and knee pads. Knowing they are well-protected gives them the confidence to start riding and helps prevent injuries.
Let them loop and swerve till they get their balance. Cycling does not have to start off in a straight line and forcing them to keep to one may end up frustrating them and add undue pressure.
Teach them to turn by leaning their body and not trying to manoeuvre the handles as if it’s a steering wheel.
