We shine the spotlight on 2 major arts events – LA BOHEME and OLLIE & THE SLURGE – you will not want to miss.

Ollie & The Slurge |
|
Ollie & The Slurge is a modern fairytale backed by a strong moral message. Presented by I Theatre, this is the brainchild of Brian Seward, the director who brought us DUCK and DIVE – The Ugly Duckling and The Frog Prince. Watch Brian work his magic and turn the theatre into 'Slurge City', transforming junk into live action characters using puppetry and theatre magic.
Ollie & The Slurge tackles two important issues in this play - bullying and environmental issues – both of which are true to real life. No man is an island and neither is Ollie. While the Slurge monsters devour everything in their path, Ollie has an accidental meeting with Spudge, a little creature with a conscience. Together, they deal with bullies and destroy the Slurge Monsters.
This play teaches us how we can deal with bullies assertively yet positively. It also highlights the message that every little effort we make is significant in preserving the environment. With a fun and entertaining manner, Ollie & The Slurge empowers us into knowing that we can help, whether in a small or big way.
This musical is for anyone from 4 to 94! It is an artful combination of comedy, puppets and live actors, blended with tuneful music, special effects, funny and endearing characters. All put together to bring this original story to life!

La Boheme |
|
La Boheme is a poignant story of 4 young people, battling cold, illness and poverty in pursuit of their art and their ideals. Directed by renowned director, Andrew Sinclair, this opera is set to some of the most famous Puccini music ever composed and is one of the greatest romantic operas of all time. We get insights from the director himself:
|
|
For me, returning to La Boheme is like becoming re-acquainted with an old friend. Having directed the piece 9 times in my career, this Singapore production is an opportunity to look at Puccini's masterpiece afresh. It is a must-see for anyone acquainted with the same composer's Tosca and Madama Butterfly, and possibly the best introduction for people who are unfamiliar with opera.

A Fresh Take
Having directed this opera in various settings from the 1830s to the late 19th century, I thought it's interesting to set it in another period of Parisian history when the country was economically depressed and the future uncertain. In the 1930s, France was chaotic and war was on the horizon. Despite this, Paris remained a melting pot for artists and writers, representing their hopes and ideals. Cafes, theatres and restaurants were full of patrons but beneath this superficial gaiety, life was very different.
The Classic Heroine
The opera begins on Christmas Eve during winter. At the start, where the unifying force is the cold, an unlikely combination of personalities that come together in a Parisian garret: Rodolfo, the self-absorbed writer; Marcello the artist; Colline, the serious-minded philosopher; and the carefree Schaunard. There's also Mimi, the heroine, who leads a wretched existence, earning money only from her sewing and embroidery.
She is the force that unites all the characters at the end. In La Boheme, as it is in so many of Puccini's operas, the heroine is the great strength of the opera, despite her fragility.
