Pregnancy Primer

Awesome! Just awesome is that moment when you know a little one is growing in your womb!! Joy, fear, worry and many other inexplicable emotions will take over and you wonder what you should do next. When the excitement quietens, mothers determine to do their very best to give baby a headstart. And, if that mother is you, then, here is a primer to help you get started on this journey through pregnancy.

  • Enjoy the moment
Yes! This is a precious moment. One you will remember for life. Savour the sensations to enjoy the thrill of recall. The joy will keep you encouraged when there are moments of stress and strain.
  • Learn all you can
For first time mums and dads, this is a learning journey they have never been on before. And, you learn best only through the experience. So, just like you tackle all other important things in life read about it, talk with experienced family and friends to guide you through the exciting months. Being mentally prepared will shield you from the emotional roller coaster it sometime can become.
  • Get your medical checks
While pregnancy is a natural phenomenon, medical supervision is reassuring. Your obstetrician will be a great resource and guide. Any potential problem can be addressed early.
  • Eat right
As baby grows and develops in your womb, all you can do to support your child is to eat well. Baby's only source of nourishment is from mum. So, while you may be challenged by nausea and cravings, aim for a diet that is well balanced, wholesome and nutrient dense. Apart from eating more in the second and third trimester to support baby's growth, your diet needs to deliver key nutrients to support cell multiplation, organ formation and growth. Nutrients in focus include folic acid, iron, zinc, calcium, AA and DHA among the many more. A maternal nutrition supplement added to your regular diet may help you achieve these goals with ease.
  • Stay active
Regular exercise is simply good for everyone. Check with your doctor if you can continue to stay active and, if all is well, enjoy the activities you feel comfortable doing. Apart from helping you stay in great shape, exercise will help with flexibility and stress relief.
  • Get adequate rest
Amidst all the excitement, take time to rest and relax. Adequate sleep and stress relief will help you cope effectively with the changes you are experiencing.
  • Share the joy
The news of the arrival of a baby always makes people bond. Apart from the obvious physical changes that will soon be visible, you may experience many emotional upheavals too. So, reach out to your closest family members and friends for the support you need. But, set the boundaries so you get enough time to enjoy with your spouse.
