Baby Bonus Card Benefits

Breastfeeding is one of the most natural human functions between mothers and children. Breast milk is a natural source of food that is readily available, perfectly suited for a baby's consumption and to support his development. See how the parent and the child can benefit from breastfeeding and how Philips AVENT range of products makes the process easier.

The World Health Organisation and the UK Department of Health recommend exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months from birth. Breast milk is beneficial because it contains nutrients and allergy-fighting antibodies. Breastfeeding can help to reduce the risks of breast and ovarian cancer in breastfeeding mothers too.

Click here for a step-by-step guide on how to breastfeed and see how you can overcome challenges faced by breastfeeding mothers.

breastfed babies dont suffer from wind or colic

tips for breastfeeding mums

Correct feeding position
It is important that your baby is correctly positioned -to make sure your baby is properly fed without you getting sore nipples. You should feel his tongue and jaws working against your breast and see his ears and temples moving slightly. If he’s not suckling properly, put your little finger in the corner of his mouth to gently ease it off your nipple and start again.

Frequency of feeds
The more you feed your baby, the more milk you can produce. By feeding 'on demand' you should produce all the milk he needs. Most breastfed babies cry to let you know when they are hungry. This is often every 2- 3 hours day and night in the early weeks and each feed may take up to half an hour.

Wind or colic
In most cases, breastfed babies don't suffer from wind or colic. If you think yours does, cuddle him against your shoulder after feeding until he burps. You may want to do this while feeding if he is fed from both breasts.

Baby’s weight
Should your baby have a low birth weight (under 2.5 kg/5lb 9oz), or you’ve had a difficult delivery, get your midwife's and your doctor’s advice to see if breastfeeding is suitable. In the first few weeks of birth, you should pay attention to your baby’s weight too.

Remember that while breast milk is the best for babies, you should always consult your doctor if you have any doubts.
