As parenting is a shared responsibility, both parents play a part in bringing up a child, being role models to the child. When both are equally involved in teaching and guiding, the child learns to respect both parents just as much.

Parents should resolve minor inconsistencies in the values they impart to their children as conflicting values can confuse the child. He may end up seeing one parent as having more authority than the other, and choose who to take instructions from. Mothers are often perceived to be “the natural parent because they spend more time with their children.

Being more generous with their praises they build the child’s confidence, nurturing and teaching with more warmth and affection. They are also better at teaching the child by making use of daily activities, like letting the child choose his own shirt to wear, or talk about the taste and texture of the food that the child is eating. However, some mothers can be over-protective, and anxious about the child making the right decision or whether the child is learning like other children of the same age. Working mothers especially often feel guilty about not doing enough for their child.

As much as mothers are concerned about their children, fathers are becoming more pro-active parents being increasingly involved in parenting. Want to do more for your child? Here are some things you should keep in mind to be a great Dad:

1.

Children learn from their fathers to be brave, helpful, independent and responsible when they see how their fathers take care of things in the house especially those that their mothers struggle with.

2.

Studies have shown that children are more active in school activities and perform better academically when fathers are interested in the child’s progress at school. Also, in times of crises – such as the passing of a loved one, or a change of environment (such as re-location of family), a father’s involvement help to buffer stress children face.

3.

Looking up to their fathers as good role models in terms of achievement, sources of knowledge and providers of financial support, children aspire to become reliable and trustworthy adults when their fathers set good examples for them to follow.

Give your child receive the best you can by working hand-in-hand with your spouse, complementing and supporting each other in the parenting process.
