Frequently asked questions on EMV

Q1:     What is EMV?

The abbreviation stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa. It is the international standard for chip payment cards, which brings greater  security to card payment products.

Q2:    What are the benefits of the new card?

With the use of the EMV card, you are assured of greater protection against fraud when making purchases with your card.

Q3:     Can the chip card be accepted everywhere?

Yes, you will be able to use your card just like what you have been doing.

Q4:     How is a transaction processed at the cashier?

Your EMV chip card will be inserted into the Smart Chip Reader. After the transaction is approved, you will be asked to sign on the charge slip to complete the purchase transaction.

Q5:     Will I be issued a new credit card PIN for my renewal

 card?

You will be able to use your existing PIN for your renewal card as the card number is the same. Should you lose your PIN, please call our 24-hour hotline at (65) 6363 3333 or 1800 363 3333. A new PIN will be issued for the replacement of lost/ stolen cards.

Q6:    Will it take longer to process my transaction?

No, it will not take longer than the usual time to complete the entire purchase transaction.

Q7:     Can I use the chip card for Internet online purchases or
          at ATMs?

The new EMV chip card functions the same way as your existing card.

Q8:     How will I know if the chip transaction is successful or
          declined?

The terminal will provide the status of the transaction, similar to what it does now, once the authorisation process is completed.

Q9:    Which OCBC Cards will be issued/renewed with an EMV
         chip?

From 11 March 2008 onwards, all renewal, replacement and new cards issued for the OCBC Platinum MasterCard and OCBC Visa Gold Card will have an EMV chip. We are migrating the other card types to EMV chip cards in phases and will notify you when your other OCBC credit cards are due for conversion.

Q10:   When can I start using my new card?

You may use the new card immediately.

Q11:   Is there any expiry date on the chip card?
          What about the chip?

The expiry date of the credit card is shown on the card. The embedded chip has the same validity period as the card.

Q12:   Is the chip card durable?

The card should withstand normal wear and tear and the chip should last as long as the card is valid. However, you should protect your card as you would do for other OCBC cards.

Q13:   What should I do if I have misplaced my card?

Please report the loss to us immediately. You may call our 24-hour hotline at 1800 363 3333 or (65) 6363 3333 if you are calling from overseas.
