Prestige Art Gallery Presents: Collecting Singapore Spirit

The Singapore Spirit takes centrestage for this exhibition, a showcase of some of Singapore’s most important artworks. Found in the collections of Teng Hwee, Joseph Zhang and Audrey Zhang,  these works represent a journey of exploration, education and enlightenment.

The exhibition is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance and vision. By sharing the collections with the public, Prestige Art Gallery intends to provide access to diverse artistic expressions, fostering cultural enrichment and promoting appreciation for different aesthetic traditions and perspectives.

Tan Choh Tee (b.1942 Singapore)

Tan Choh Tee is the 2006 Cultural Medallion recipient for Visual Arts, an honour conferred by the Singapore Government. He studied at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) where he was taught by pioneer artists such as Cheong Soo Pieng, Liu Kang and Georgette Chen. Tan is renowned for his impressionist oil paintings in landscape and still life. The intense colours and brushworks resonate with the viewer's deeper emotions.

Aw Tee Hong (b.1932 China – d. 2021 Singapore)

Aw Tee Hong was born in 1932 in Wenchang, China, and migrated to Singapore in 1950. The following year, he studied at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and pursued his further education at Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China. Aw has exhibited his works at over 30 solo exhibitions throughout his career.

Replicas of his most renowned sculpture works (currently on display at Raffles Place) will be showcased at Collecting Singapore Spirit. These pieces illuminate the beauty and complexity of the Lion City’s Soul.

He is famous for working in a wide-ranging repertoire of art styles and various mediums, and for inventing a wide array of unique methods and expressions. This reflected his ability to reconfigure aspects of reality and present entirely new visual dimensions. Through his innovations in style and subject matter, Cheong Soo Pieng demonstrated a sense of creativity that proved to be far more advanced than most of his contemporaries.

Chen Cheng Mei went on to travel all around the world on self-organised trips from the 1970s onwards, including to Africa, South Asia, Oceania and beyond. These travels inspired many of her artworks.
